Ham House

Supposedly one of the most haunted houses in the country, Ham House was built in 1610 by Sir Vavasour, an advisor to King James I. It has the only surviving example of a still room from the time in the world.

I quite liked the Below Stairs part of the house as there was the option to try a sample of beer similar to that drunk at the time.

Open every day of the week:

Beware– I wasn’t aware before I went but the house is guided tour only on a Friday due to light level monitoring (National Trust guidelines only allow the house to have a certain level of light exposure per year). This means that, although the tours are good, you aren’t able to explore at your leisure and it is only possible to see the front of the house.
